How I Overcame IBS After 10 Years of Chronic Pain, Constipation, and Diarrhoea

For over 10 years, I struggled with IBS, chronic pain, constipation, and diarrhoea. It consumed my life. Every meal felt like a gamble. Every day was dictated by what was happening in my gut.

I became obsessed.

I spent hours on Google, searching for answers, reading endless blogs, forums, and studies about gut health, leaky gut, probiotics, and elimination diets. I tried everything—gluten-free, dairy-free, low-FODMAP, cleanses, detoxes, gut-healing powders, and every supplement under the sun.

I controlled everything I ate. I cut out sugar, then carbs, then even healthy foods, convinced that something in my diet was triggering my symptoms. But nothing worked.

Even more embarrassingly, I became obsessed with what was happening in the toilet.

Would I have constipation today or diarrhoea? Would my stomach bloat after eating? Would I be in pain all night? My entire focus was on my gut, my food, and my symptoms. And still, nothing changed.

The Real Cause of My IBS Wasn’t Food

For years, I thought my IBS was about food. I believed my gut was broken. I thought I had digestive issues that needed fixing.

But the real reason my digestive system was out of balance was something I had never considered—my emotions.

I had spent my whole life controlling. I controlled what I ate, how I worked, how I lived. I didn’t allow myself to feel emotions like fear, loneliness, anger, or sadness. I buried them. I resisted them. I ignored them.

And this constant emotional suppression had a direct impact on my body—on my gut, my digestion, my pain.

The more I controlled, the worse my IBS got.

Healing Came When I Stopped Controlling and Started Surrendering

Everything changed when I learned to surrender.

I had to retrain myself to acknowledge and allow emotions, rather than resist them.

I did this through practices like meditation, journaling, and self-inquiry. I created safe spaces to actually feel what I had been avoiding for years. And when I did, my gut started to shift.

My digestion became normal.

I stopped fearing food.

I no longer had to worry about constipation, diarrhoea, or chronic pain.

And best of all—I could finally eat without overthinking every bite. No more strict diets. No more obsessing over what was “safe” to eat.
